Ice Luge FAQ: Everything You Need to Know
The Basics
What exactly is an ice luge? An ice luge is a functional ice sculpture designed with internal channels. Liquid (usually a spirit or cocktail) is poured into the top, travels through the ice to chill, and exits at the bottom directly into a glass or—for the more adventurous—someone's mouth.
How long does an ice luge last? Under standard indoor conditions (approx. 70°F), a standard-sized luge will remain functional for 4 to 6 hours. While the fine details of the sculpture may soften over time, the internal "track" will keep working as long as the block remains intact.
Does it make a mess when it melts? We provide a drainage tray with every order. This sits beneath the luge to collect meltwater. For larger events, we can provide a discrete drainage tube that runs to a bucket or floor drain to ensure your bar area stays bone-dry.
Ordering & Logistics
How much lead time do you need for an order? Because each luge is custom-carved and needs time to "temper" for durability, we recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance. However, give us a call for last-minute requests—if we have the ice in stock, we’ll do our best to make it happen.
Do you deliver and set it up? Absolutely. Ice luges are heavy and fragile. Our team handles the delivery, professional setup, and lighting. We’ll make sure the luge is perfectly balanced and flowing correctly before we leave.
Can I customize the design? Yes! We can freeze logos, flowers, or waterproof LED lights directly into the ice. We can also carve the luge into specific shapes, like a corporate logo, a mountain range, or even a classic swan.
Usage & Safety
What drinks work best with a luge? High-proof spirits (like vodka or tequila) work best because they have a lower freezing point and won't clog the channels. Sugary mixers or cream-based liqueurs can sometimes leave a residue, so we recommend a quick water "flush" between different types of drinks.
Is the ice "clean" enough to drink off of? We use clinically pure, filtered water to create our ice blocks. This ensures the ice is crystal clear and completely food-safe.
How heavy are the sculptures? A single-block luge typically weighs between 150 and 200 lbs. You will need a sturdy, stable table (no folding card tables!) to support the weight safely.
Pro-Tips for Your Event
-
The Chill Factor: For the best results, keep your liquor in the freezer or on ice before pouring. The colder the liquid, the less it melts the internal track of the luge.
-
Lighting is Everything: Ice looks best when lit from behind or beneath. Ask us about our multi-color LED pucks to make your luge glow.
-
Photo Op: Encourage guests to take photos early in the night when the carving details are at their sharpest!
